The Challenge

A local business operating 16 workplace EV charging stations for employees and visitors was experiencing recurring reliability issues.

Whilst the charging units themselves were generally functioning correctly, connectivity problems meant chargers were frequently showing as offline on the management platform. Our Investigation

Following the award of the maintenance contract, our team undertook a detailed review of the charging infrastructure and associated communications network.

Most commercial EV charging stations rely on an internet connection to communicate with management platforms, process charging sessions, provide reporting data, and allow remote monitoring. These connections are typically achieved via either:

  • Hard-wired network connections
  • Mobile network communications

Our assessment identified connectivity as the primary cause of the ongoing operational issues.

Working closely with the client, we implemented a programme of improvements which included:

Upgrading selected EV charging stations

Introducing a more robust communications strategy using a combination of hard-wired and mobile network connectivity

Establishing a planned monthly maintenance and inspection programme

Carrying out routine operational checks to identify potential issues before they could impact users

Since implementing the improvements and planned maintenance regime, charger availability and reliability have significantly improved.
